Wool Fibre Blankets & Throws courtesy of CSIROWOOL - THE RAW MATERIAL

Merino sheep first arrived to Australia 1788, descendants from the royal merino flocks of Spain.  Even though this wool quality was already considered to be fine, it was the MacArthurs who with their selective and pure breeding methods produced a truly authentic Australian Merino, which had even finer wool fibre. It is this superfine micron fibre that we use in our blankets, its natural properties providing softness, comfort and warmth.

Environmental awareness is important, we are all well aware of the “islands of plastic”.  With Wool, when disposed of in soil, it will naturally decompose in a short time, breaking down to release valuable nutrients into the ground.

Wool is a hygroscopic fibre. As the humidity in the air changes, the fibre compensates absorbing and releasing water vapour. Wool constantly reacts to changes in body temperature, maintaining its wearer’s thermos-physical comfort in both cold and warm weather.

Wool fibres are crimped, when spun in a yarn and knitted into blankets, this tightly packed “crimping” contains millions of tiny pockets of air.  Combined with the fibres unique structure allows it to absorb and release moisture (up to 30% of it’s weight), keeping the wearer comfortable.

Wool is naturally safe. It is not known to cause allergies and does not promote the growth of bacteria. Thanks to its high water and nitrogen content, wool is naturally flame-retardant, having a far higher ignition point than many other fibres.

“Merino sheep are all over the world, but Australian Merino has a softness and style that can only be found in the sheep raised in Australia.”

                                                                                President of Zegna Baruffa

Zegna Baruffa based in Italy is renowned worldwide for their innovative spinning skills.  They produce many exquisite quality yarns, one being “Cashwool”  which we use in our blankets.

Cashwool is spun from merino wool fibre with a superb level of fineness and pureness, considered by the spinners the only way to obtain an incredibly soft, absolutely white, lightweight yarn with luminosity and fastness to the many colours offered by Baruffa, in subtle shades that only the Italians are famous for.

Spun on a specially patented system, this worsted yarn has a smooth, clean finish and is considered by many to be the benchmark quality standard for extra fine wool yarn.

Merino Wool Blanket, Blankets & ThrowsOUR KNITTERS

Our Knitting factory in Nepal practises sustainability and the preservation of natural and community resources, producing not only products of exceptional quality, but ones that also comply with international ecological standards.

Our knitters are experts with fine fibre knitting techniques, being familiar with the latest manufacturing techniques, stitch construction, knitting tensions and wash finishes, all of which  combined, create a blanket that has a clean hand-feel, softness and long lasting wear properties.

Double layered knit construction – gives a blanket with a good weight, drape and wear properties.  We also find this structure has a stability which allows our blankets to be wool cycle machine washable, despite their size and superfine fibre structure.

Merino Wool Blanket, Blankets & ThrowsTHE LIFESTYLE

All our blankets are vigorously tested prior to production, exposed to the rituals of daily life, they are slept on by our cats, snuggled into on the sofa watching tv, even taken to the beach as a picnic blanket and each design is wash tested on a wool cycle machine wash.

Beds are bigger, however not all blankets are.  Our blanket with it’s 210cm width and 220cm length provides more than adequate coverage for most beds and those sleeping under them.

Being Machine Washable, is being practical, these blankets weigh 2.9kgs, a gentle wool cycle machine wash and drying laid flat is quick and easy to do – but read our washing care guide.  We have much experience over the years, and know full well the effect temperature can have on blanket size!

A good night’s sleep is always appreciated.  Various studies have been conducted re the effectiveness of wool in clothing and bedding on sleep quality.  Results concluding that merino natural wool has a positive impact on sleep quality and quantity, based on it’s natural ability to regulate temperature fluctuations and manage humidity, keeping the sleeper warm when it is cold and cool when it is hot.

Thoughtful, unique gifts are always appreciated, be they for a Wedding, a Christening, a new home, that someone special.  That is one of the reasons, that all our blankets arrive packed and gift wrapped with gift cards for your to write your personal message.
